What different OS's has anyone used when hosting their site? Red Hat Linux and Windows seem to be the most often used but has anyone used some of the lesser known Unix-based OS's like FreeBSD and Debian? And are they as stable for running web servers as Red Hat Linux?

Thanks.

I have had sites hosted on several different platforms. However, I have never personally run a server with any of these. Also the host itself could have made my view of these OS's better or worse.

Windows NT - Didn't like it. The host I used was very unstable with Windows NT. Maybe it was the host's fault, I'm not sure because it was so long ago (my first host and I had no idea what I was doing.)

FreeBSD - The host I used with FreeBSD with very stable.

Linux - Right now everything I'm doing is on Linux servers. That's just because they are so common. I would probably also use FreeBSD again also.

I'll be the minority then, i'm a windows person! We use Win 2003 servers, which I much prefer because you can have real ASP, and ASP.Net etc which you can't get on Linux (Before anyone says anything, ChilliSoft isnt real asp Wink)

I've got nothing against linux, but its Windows for me!

I've never been on a Windows server but I've heard mixed reviews about them, some people love them others hate them. All the hosts I've used though have been using Red Hat Linux.

Glad to hear that Free BSD is good though, I was looking into it.

Some people just don't give Windows a chance because things are done slightly differently to Linux, and mainly because its made by Microsoft. All operating systems have good points and bad points, Windows is no different!

Yeah, I'm looking into getting Debian for my personal PC right now, just so I can check it out.

What is it about Windows systems that you like (as compared with Linux/Unix or just in general, either one)?

I've used Mac, Uni*, and Window. Currently on Windoz and it's stable and good.

Apache on either Uni* or Window works fine, its the admin functions that change. Windows is easier to use when your teaching some one else, especially just before vacation time Very Happy

I'm a Unix guy, so even though I use Windows for surfing along with most, I love *nix for hosting. I've used Red Hat, and BSD is fine too. But like Josh mentioned, it's the actual hosting personel that would be the ones most likely to muck things up. It doesn't matter how stable the OS is, if the host oversells and crams hundreds and hundreds of accounts on the same box.
