Vote on what you use. Do you prefer to design for a fluid or fixed width page design. This doest not apply to sites that are centered, just regular designs.

I usually try to design fluid, but I am currently working on one design that is fixed.

I don't know if I prefer one or the other. I do both. Looking at my recent sites, I've gone fixed more, it seems... but, I don't neccessarily prefer it.

I usually prefer fluid but some sites work better when fixed.

I have to say .. both. There have been sites I used a fixed design, but the most of my work is done in fluid layots so I've chosen the fluid type Smile

I a simplicity freak and so fixed is generally my style. That way at really high resolutions you don't get a mess. I used to design all fluid but now I prefer a clean-cut print-style layout. Easy to navigate/read/print/consistent across browsers and resolutions. I can't stand really wonky complex visual designs. The novelty wears off quick and they are awkward. I also get sick of the plain columns layouts. You'd be surprised how much you can do with a simple centered fixed layout by simply making your template not just a freaking rectangle.

Fixed here too, for most things. Forums being one exception. Most of the time I see fluid "Design" but not a true fluid site. The columns stay the same size so the text width stays the same but design elements are "repeating" to fill the entire page.

Studies have shown that text longer than certain line lengths become hard to read. I never make my content areas over about 500px wide, it's just too hard to follow down to the next line. Forums break this rule and I tend to read forums less than blogs these days Wink

I do like some fluid designs, but by and large they usually don't add any value to the experience and are just simply a design choice. I've had a lot of clients tell me they want it to "fill up the whole screen". I tend to roll my eyes. I like fluid when it's done right and I very much like designs that take up the whole screen yet the "content" area is fixed. Very nice way to handle both issues.
