|
|
Eolas Technologies has sued Microsoft for using patented technology in Internet Explorer. The company is now asking the U.S. District Court in Chicago to take distribution rights of Internet Explorer away from Microsoft. The injunction would stop Microsoft from shipping any version of IE or Windows. Microsoft could still ship these products if the patented technology was removed. The patent in question is owned by the University of California. Eloas is the licensee and sublicensor of the patent.
Microsoft said that they have plans to appeal the court's ruling. Microsoft also announced that a new version of IE. The new version will be released next year and will avoid the patents. The World Wide Web Consortium said that IE's changes could affect a large number of websites. Microsoft has discussed these changes with the Consortium.

How much was the estimated cost to MS if they paid for the license? If they are forced to stop shipping IE and even Windows that could end up costing them more than the initial licensing cost.
Looking forward to see what happens! _________________ Keith McLaughlin - DeveloperCube Moderator

If I remember correctly its in the region of 500 million dollars! This doesn't really just affect Microsoft though, any current browser is infringing on the patent - they are just going after Microsoft at the moment because they have lots of money, the others could be next! _________________ Paul Woodland - DeveloperCube Moderator

Though I am not suprised to hear this, it dissapoints me. I know that Microsoft makes all of the money, but Microsoft has made an os that I love. I also enjoy using IE, simply because it's just a great browser and it supports more features than Mozilla and Netscape. This will affect AOL also, though they can switch to netscape if its needed. Personally, I do not use AOL, because I think it is weak.

AOL can't switch to NS because it was discontinued. They can, however, switch to using Mozilla, which I wouldn't be surprised to hear if they do. _________________ Keith McLaughlin - DeveloperCube Moderator
