Ok my site is hosted on a friends site, so my url is something like
mysite.host.net, now i've been wanting to buy a domain name so i'm just wondering if it will work since my site address is a sub domain, also would i need a DNS manager? as i don't want it to just redirect to my site.

Unless you have a dedicated IP, which is quite unusual, you will need your friends host to add that the subdomain can also be accessed using that domain name (in Windows, its called a "Host Header" - not sure what *nix people call it) Unless they do that, the only way to access the site is by redirecting - which you said you already said you dont want to do!

I'd just move my webpages/DB over to the new host and forget about the subdomain you've been using. If you were actually getting significant traffic to the old site, just provide a page that allows visitors to click to visit the new site, at least that way you can avoid the redirect.
