Every domain I buy, I buy to develop or to redirect to a current site or a site that I plan to develop. So, it is my plan to use every domain name. For me, in use would be if the domain name is being used for a current site or if my plan for the domain name was to redirect it and it is redirecting to a current site. Using that metric, I have 145 domains not in use (and 67 in use). That is 212 because I just bought another one, a .com just now. This probably includes domains for a few older ventures that I have taken down, as well. And a lot of them are derivatives on yet to be launched ideas, different spellings, etc.
For example, I own devcube.com, developercube.com and developercubeforums.com (the last two I acquired when I acquired this site, the first I picked up later since it was what some people were calling it and it makes sense). I also own ifroggy.com, ifroggy.net, ifroggy.org, ifroggy.us, eyefroggy.com, i-froggy.com and ifroggynetwork.com. I'm sure it seems silly to some, but when you have a brand that you have spent so much time on and put so much into, for me, it's worth it to protect it. _________________ Patrick O'Keefe - DeveloperCube Administrator | Articles

I understand you buying domains to protect your brand, but I don't understand how someone wants to keep domains and not develop them. Have you ever tried working out how much it's cost you to renew domains that aren't doing anything? _________________ Keith McLaughlin - DeveloperCube Moderator

Like I said, I do plan to develop/use every domain I buy. I don't buy any domains I don't plan to develop/use and if I ever change my mind on an idea and decide I don't want to do the idea, I sell the domain name or, more often, just let it expire. But, yes, I have. You can calulate it from that list, actually. Excluding acquisitions from third parties (which I did a bunch of this year), and assuming I renew every one, 212 x $6.95. So, that would be $1,473.40. So, if you then take that 145 number I gave, you would get $1,007.75. I'm not gonna renew every one, but probably nearly all. It's a lot of money, yes... but at the same time, it isn't. I don't have a ton of expenses. Primarily domain names and hosting. Then again, I'm really into domain names, personally, so the expense is well worth it for me. I believe that having a great domain name - or the best domain name - can do a lot for a site, both promotion and perception wise and, besides, I'm just into domain names in general. Having a cool domain makes me happy. lol I'm all about what makes you happy.
My thought process is that when I have a good idea for a site, I should register or acquire a domain for it, rather than waiting and having someone else take a good domain or, potentially, the best domain name for such a site. The cost of registering/renewing a domain name is so small ($6.95 a year), that there is little investment/risk involved in doing so. I consider domain names similar to real estate - they generally only appreciate. I can either reserve my idea now or pay more for it later.
As an example, I registered phpforums.com a few years ago. It had expired. I liked the idea of a PHP community, an idea I still plan to persue. So, I registered it. I believe that it is the best domain name for a PHP community. If I hadn't registered it, it would have definitely been gone by now. Long gone. If I were to put it up for sale, I'd expect a few thousand dollars, at least. It's cost me $30-40 to keep for 3-4 years. So, you could say I've actually saved money and/or saved having to compromise on a lesser domain name, since it's all downhill from there.
But, like I said, I'm personally into domain names. Not everyone is. _________________ Patrick O'Keefe - DeveloperCube Administrator | Articles

Hmmm, I see your philosophy. Unfortunately I can't get a job yet so I still have to suck up to my parents for domain names.
I share a similar view, if you come up with an idea, want to develop it, and see the right domain: buy it. I'd rather "waste" money renewing it for 3 years before I get to it, than wait a few months to see it taken. _________________ http://truestarforums.com

| Hey Patrick, I wonder how many hours you can sleep per night! Do you handle all those domains by yourself? |
