Well, first off true SEO isn't a trick. Forget about cloaking, hiding keywords, doorway pages, etc. They'll just get you banned.

Focus on writing clean code, using header tags, writing good copy and getting a lot of good quality backlinks and you'll do okay.

I have seen that social bookmarking brings some easy traffic for short period. It also helps to get back links in some high PR websites. Article submission, Directory submissions, links in blogs, etc can help in SEO. Exchanging links with high quality websites also helps.

While a outside company can help your rankings, you can do a lot to help yourself. Here's some tips.

#1 DON'T try and trick the search engines using link farms, keyword spamming, and hidden text. Get blackballed and you'll never get out of google hell.

#2 Find the keywords people use to search for what your site is about. It doesn't make sense to optimize your site for "Active Server Pages" when the majority of people search for "ASP"

#3 Insert these keywords into your title tag so the robots will know what your page is about. Make sure the keywords in the title are also in the body of your page or the search engines will think you're trying to trick them.

#4 Describe images with alt tags. Not only does this help with accessibility, but it helps the search engines to index your images.

#5 Make use of html elements such as "h1-h6", "b", "em", ect... to put emphasis on keywords and headers.

#6 Make use of meta tags such as keyword, and description.
