I'm hoping someone can clue me in as to what exactly the term (DDOS attack) means as I have no idea. _________________ GamingMMO.com |

D Denial of Service
Can't remember off hand what exactly what the first D is but basically it's overloading a server with requests to keep traffic out. |

Thanks for the info. Is there any good way to protect a server from this? _________________ GamingMMO.com |

Nope, there's not a lot you can do except blocking the IPs the attacks are coming from.
What I dont understand is why people do them. They don't benefit from them in any way. _________________ Keith McLaughlin - DeveloperCube Moderator

Its normally against people they don't like - its a bit like graffiti, they dont benefit, they do it because they know its wrong
There are some technologies out there to help in protection, they tend to work by analysing your regular traffic patterns and stopping traffic if its irregular (its obviously a lot more complicated than that, but thats the idea!). They aren't 100% effective though, nothing can be really i'm afraid - just look at the payment processors, WorldPay etc who go through them, they have lots of money, but can't do a thing half the time if the attack is big enough _________________ Paul Woodland - DeveloperCube Moderator

At least with graffiti you get the satisfaction of seeing your work (not that I know) but with these ddos attacks everything is returned to normal as soon as possible. I guess it's probably the fact that you caused some businesses to lose money is the encentive involved. _________________ Keith McLaughlin - DeveloperCube Moderator
