Sorry, I missed your post above Paul's, I agree though, it does depend on all those things as far as what is ethically right to do, but from a legal standpoint (can I even ask for my money back) Paul brought up something I had not thought of.

A backup system is a must. With that said, you should always backup your site - including databases - yourself.

I agree with this and I blindly let myself believe my host that they backed up their servers every night. Now I back up pretty often just so something like that doesn't happen again.

Yeah, I backup every few days or every week usually, anyone know of an easy way to automatically backup your site and send the file to an email or have it download directly to your hard drive if you are on.

You could write a script to login via ftp and download everything and then set it as a scheduled task on your PC?

Ask your host if they produce a full backup file. My cpanel control panel has a section where I can download everything in one file. If your host creates this kind of file you could write a script (like Paul mentioned) and download that one file.

If you host does backups, that's great, but even so don't count on them. I've heard horror stories.

My old host was pretty bad with daily downtime, sometimes for half the day. But their terms indicate no rufunds ever. Bah.

So, that's why decided to become a host myself. It's great, I've got lots of control, and there isn't any downtime!
